PROCESS: This is a maquette proposal for public sculpture. The inspiration for the design is sourced from the monolithic aesthetic of military bunkers that were made during the Second World War which have been left for dereliction across the world. Structures cast in concrete; they have become decaying pieces of history for future generations to experience. Making walls between ourselves and our neighbour is what we as humans struggle to control and break free from these constraints. The maquette gives license for artists to dream up more ambitious and free flowing ideas which don’t follow commercial aims. What is sculpture but the need to confront the world with the materials we have and express our ambitions whilst knowing that all we do is finite? In making art, with nothing to lose what is more joyous than having dreams for planting a flag in this world and making our own declaration before leaving ourselves open for criticism?
